Super Spars have worked extensively with Christian Birrell over the last 2 years to create a Championship winning Fireball Rig. Christian has used the new M7+ to win both the Fireball World Championships and National Championships this year.

World Championships were held in Patayya, Thailand in March 2014. The week saw a variety of conditions from 8 – 20 knots, and Super Spars rigs won every single race.
All 3 boats on the podium were using Super Spars, demonstrating that Super Spars now dominates the class. Super Spars also came 1st and 2nd at both the 2013 World and National Championships.

Super Spars M7+ rig took 28 from of the top 30 places at the 2014 World Championships at Patayya dominating the event.
A significantly optimised rig was used with a new stainless steel halyard lock, extended gooseneck and was fitted with the new spreader angle adjustment system

After some very close racing, teams using Super Spars rigs clinched the top three places despite the continuing tricky variable wind conditions that ranged from virtually zero to twenty knots win>

The new M2 was in first place with the new M7+ Fireball rig in second and third. All were updated with fully adjustable spreaders, halyard lock and extended goosenecks.

Of the top eleven finishers, seven crews were using Super Spars rigs and many have commented on their experiences.

For over 20 years I have worked closely with Super Spars and every time it never ceases to amaze me how consistent the sections are and how reliable the whole package is. I always feel we are getting the best possible rig for the boat with the best fittings. The M2 section definitely gave us a slight edge over the M7 particularly in light winds. More importantly over the past few years you are getting the best core material for the spar knowing there will be very little effect on the performance of the spars over life of the spar.’’ (Fireball World champions Simon Potts and Tom Gillard)

The last few weeks also saw Christian Birrell and Sam Brearey travel to Slovenia to battle for the Fireball European and World titles. Christian was looking to add to his national title won earlier this year, while Sam was looking to defend the world title he won in Australia

Having a European and a World championships back to back brings many challenges, consistency being the biggest challenge.

For Christian and Sam the Europeans started well with a second, but with only 3 races in very light tricky conditions, the boys slipped to 4th overall, and 3rd in the Junior European Championship. Although not the start to the World Championships they wanted, Birrell/Brearey stayed up beat, knowing the main event was yet to come.

As the World Championships started Christian and Sam knew that consistency and calmness would be key. On the opening Day they boys put in 2 top 3 finishes and throughout the series continued to deliver top results over and over again, highlighting the versatility and high performance of the Super Spar M7 mast.

Leading after 2 days Christian and Sam continued to battle on, with multiple place changes throughout the week, they never slipped out of the top 3 medal positions.

With a mixed penultimate day accumulating a race win and a discard Birrell/Brearey were just 2 points from the world title going into the final day show down, and virtually guaranteed a silver medal.

However the boys were stumped by the lack of wind and never got the chance to battle for the title, finishing in 2nd place. A Great effort and achievement by the pair, showing the most consistency throughout the 2 weeks of competitions.

"Throughout the 2 weeks, in every condition from 4 knots to 20, from flat to chop, we felt really fast and in a fantastic groove.’’(Christian Birrell, placed second with Sam Brearey)

"Credit must go to the teams at Super Spars and North Sails for developing and delivering such consistent, fast products. Our thanks to them both for their support. It was a real shame not to get to battle it out on the last day.

We felt really confident going in, and who knows what would have happened. Both Christian and I are hugely grateful for the amazing support we have had this year from all our sponsors.’’ (Sam Brearey, placed second with Christian Birrell)

"The new rig made a real difference in boat speed and contributed to our victory. We would like to thank Super Spars for a very professional and personal service.

Due to Super Spars in-depth knowledge of their products, we were able to put exactly the right stiffness spar in the boat to suit our crew weight and compete at Championship winning level from the very first race." (Richard Wagstaff, placed third with Matt Burge)

Super Spars rigs were back in Championship winning form in Portoroz, Slovenia at the 2013 Fireball Europeans.

Three of the top five were competing using Super Spars rigs taking 1st, 4th and 5th places overall.

Richard Wagstaff and Matt Burge won the event in great style using Super Spars new specification Fireball M7+ rig.

In a field of 62 boats in light shifty winds, they were crowned European Champions despite difficult sailing conditions that allowed only three races to finish.

This demonstrates Super Spars approach to producing masts with the right stiffness for the crew weight provides the optimal solution for sailors wishing to further inprove their boat speed with the payoff of better results.

Richard Wagstaff commented that their new rig "made a real difference in boat speed and contributed to their victory" He continued "we would like to thank Super Spars for a very professional and personal service. Due to Super Spars in-depth knowledge we were able to put exactly the right stiffness spar in the boat to suit our crew weight and compete at Championship winning level from the very first race."

Super Spars New specification Fireball rigs fly out of the start gate!

The event was a Fireball open combined with joint open with good sailors there.

The weather didn't disappoint, and was as forecast with light winds with warm sun. The second started in warm sunshine with wind varying from five to ten knots south westerly which stayed consistently for most of the day so three races were able to be completed.

Against strong opposition, Super Spars rigs were placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd from a field of fifteen Fireballs.

Nathan Batchelor's first outing with the rig commented ''Mast is very nice- attention to detail seems very good- the halyard lock and adjustable spreaders are great. We were the heaviest team in the top 5 but were trapezing at the same time or earlier than others in the generally light conditions.''

Christian Birrell was equally pleased with the Super Spars rig commenting '' I honestly think you are providing a better product now – Selden pretty much refuse to fit mast locks and your spreader bracket is much better and the extended gooseneck is also better than Selden.

Ian Dobson and Sam Brealey have won the Tiger Trophy in a Speed Sails Fireball powered by Super Spars M7+ full rig.
Congratulations to Ian and Sam for winning the 20th Tiger Trophy in a fleet of 210 boats.

Yet another win notched up for Super Spars M7+

The Fireball was using Super Spars latest rig set up with the Olympic Gold winning M7+, equipped with halyard lock, ultra low stretch rigging and the new super stiff B10 Boom.

The event started off with gusty weather with gusts up to 30 knots and the M7+ gust responsiveness was in its element in helping to provide the best controllable boat speed in challenging conditions.

As is the way with sailing it was sailing consistency in all races that won through. The Super Spars rigs has a great track record of being able to win across a wide range of wind conditions and help sailors achieve consistent results over changing wind conditions to win key events.

Our M7+ is just one of our range of mast and boom tubes that have the controllable power provided by our superior high grade aluminium mast and boom tubes.

As we get into the New Year some of you have already embarked on this year's campaign by participating in the annual winter pursuit events or a winter series at the local clubs and some of us are busy preparing our boats and ourselves for the demands of the coming season. Some of that preparation will include routine maintenance, gear upgrade and replacement and some of us may be eagerly awaiting the arrival of the brand new boat ordered some months ago.

We are blessed with time honoured suppliers and well established products and although the 3D and Aeroweb sails were introduced to our fleet last year we have witnessed mostly fine tuning from the boat builders and sail makers for a few years now.

It’s important to have development in the class as long as it stays within the national rules that we so cherish, but it’s refreshing when we see new products introduced and that’s why the launch of the new M2 mast from Superspars should receive a warm welcome. This is the latest in a line of masts from

Super Spars and their presence in the fleet goes back years. The M7 was the mast of choice for many in the past and the for those now looking for a stiffer section the M2 should be seriously considered as it not only maintains the magic ingredient that is designed into all the Super Spars masts tubes, increased magnesium which continues to give controlled bend and recovery response, but being 9% stiffer fore & aft, 5% stiffer sideways than the M7 will be capable of delivering more power from the sails for the heavier helm in all conditions.

Add to this the weight, a respectable 1.065Kg/m and a very low centre of gravity to reduce pitching it becomes a very viable option.

Over the next few months Jon Clarke at Edge sails will be developing a choice of sails to compliment the mast bend characteristics and both of us will be using the M2 over the coming season and I for one am eager to see how it performs? We both hope to be ever present on the Solo circuit and at the Championships so happy to share our experience and give an honest appraisal of the mast performance from an experienced circuit racer and a club sailor’s perspective.

If you are now wanting more information on the M2 then call Simon Bevan at Super Spars who will be more than willing to spend time answering any questions you may have.

Looking forward to getting out there but the small matter of a complete boat refurbish to finish first? Don’t you just love a bit of wood!!

Belated New Year Wishes to you all
